Annie and Ben Sussman, a middle-aged couple living on New York City's Upper West Side, are navigating a new chapter in their lives. Ben is a dedicated cardiologist with a thriving practice, while Annie has recently retired after 25 years of teaching writing. With their son, Alex, now settled in California, they find themselves tasting the first bittersweet moments of freedom they haven’t known since their early days of marriage three decades ago.

Freed from the demands of her career, Annie is finally pursuing her long-held dream of becoming a playwright. She has completed her first play and is gaining momentum, sending out submissions to contests and festivals with growing hope. But just as her creative journey begins to take flight, tragedy strikes. Her mother, Rose, suffers a serious fall and must move in with Annie and Ben. For Annie, it feels like the curtain has abruptly fallen just as her second act is getting underway.

Life Alert continues the journey of Annie and Ben Sussman and is the stand-alone sequel to The Inferno.
